As has been proved by 65 year old Kailash Singh from Chatav village near Varanasi. This gentleman has not bathed for the last 37 years, nor has he shorn his hideous 6 feet long locks for the last 39 years.
Indians have, sadly, celebrated the birth of a male child traditionally and looked down upon the birth of a girl. Though education has helped change the mindset of people to quite an extent, the gender bias is still seen in extreme cases like these.
Singh has 7 daughters from his 60 year old wife, Kalavati Devi.
What is most remarkable about this man’s remarkable feat is that he lives in a place where summer temperatures can get as high as 47 degrees. Not bathing for 37 YEARS in such sweltering heat does speak volumes about his steely resolve!!
And he does not spend his days in an air conditioned office either. He is a simpleton who tends his cows on the banks of River Ganges in Varanasi, when is not whiling away his time on the various ghats dotting the city.
It is obvious that he stinks from a mile.
All efforts by the family to get him to bathe have fallen on deaf ears. They once tried getting him o bathe in a stream but he put up stiff resistance, fought them all single-handedly and rushed back home.
His wife threatened not to sleep with him if he did not clean himself but that has had ot helped either. The complying wife finally gave in when she saw that her warning had gone unheeded, and started sleeping with him again saying that her religion and upbringing teaches her to put up with her husband’s whims and fancies, even if it meant putting up with the stench.
With his filthy habits, Kailash Singh is the butt of many a jokes among neighbors, friends and even family. But he is unperturbed by this, and justifies his act by saying that he is merely complying with the Lord’s will!!!
Singh’s youngest daughter who is now 16 years of age says that her father’s eccentricity has made her popular at school, with many of her classmates even flocking to her home to have a dekko at the man who has not bathed or washed for the last 37 years!
I am anguished when I see illiterate people like this gentleman continue to spend a primitive lifestyle. Unable to break the shackles of ignorance and obscure mysticism.
While many have found him an amusing character and a funny man, I am pained to see this attitude.

“There are many people who have a poor character that mock me for not washing. They do not understand my decision but I will not change my mind as it is god’s choice, not mine”, said Kailash.He says he purifies himself with a ‘fire bath’ every evening. The evening ritual comprises of inhaling locally produced marijuana followed by dancing around a bonfire invoking hymns in praise of Lord Shiva.

‘Earlier I would be angry but there’s nothing we can do as he doesn’t listen to anyone”, says she.The only contact with water Kailash has is to wash his mouth and hands.
“I have no son, so I will never wash again,” he said. “Maybe when I am born again I will wash.”
Conclusion
The reason I am writing about this guy is to highlight the grim face of “India shining”.I am anguished when I see illiterate people like this gentleman continue to spend a primitive lifestyle. Unable to break the shackles of ignorance and obscure mysticism.
While many have found him an amusing character and a funny man, I am pained to see this attitude.
