Looks On Campus: Ellie – Colorado State University

Looks On Campus: Ellie – Colorado State University

I have admired Ellie‘s sense of style since high school. She was always put-together elegantly and never failed to look anything but flawless. It was great to run into her at Jives, a local coffee shop in my hometown of Colorado Springs. As usual, her polished style stood out, and I was thrilled to have to opportunity to interview her for my next Looks on Campus post. It always get pure shopping.

Ellie 101

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? ”I absolutely adore fashion magazines like Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s Bazaar. I also love online shopping and browsing Tumblr for inspiration.”
Where do you like to shop? ”BCBG is one of my favorite brands, but it’s so expensive, especially for a broke college student. I like Forever 21 and thrift store shopping. Sometimes you get lucky and find brand-name items for almost nothing. It’s a sport.”

How to Transition Combat Boots from Summer to Fall

How to Transition Combat Boots from Summer to Fall

Combat boots were definitely my most worn boot last year and I have a sneaking suspicion they will be this year, too. Why, you ask? Well, these babies are oh-so versatile and can match almost any style. Likewise, they’re great for transitioning from summer into pumpkin season!
To prove my point, I’ve put together two outfits incorporating my trusty combat boots. One is perfect for early fall, while the other is ideal for colder weather. Scroll down to check them both out:

1. Fall Flowers

This outfit is great for those warmer, almost-fall days. I paired a summer dress with a denim jacket, although, if you have one, I think a denim vest would look pretty snazzy, too. I opted to leave my legs bare, but knee-high socks or tights would also be a stylish addition if it’s chillier where you are.
As for the dress, who says floral is only for spring and summer? Like with most patterns, if the floral has a dark base – in this case, black – it’s definitely appropriate for sipping pumpkin spice lattes and crunching on leaves on your way to class.

2. Sweater Weather

For colder days, there is nothing cozier than the oversized sweater and a chunky infinity scarf. Of course, you also can’t go wrong with green utility jacket. On my legs, I went with some thick leggings, because as everyone knows, wearing pants every single day is hard. To not fall into the “leggings as pants” epidemic, just be sure your sweater covers what Miley Cyrus’s outfit did not cover at the VMAs.
On occasion, a fun beanie with an animal (or a sassy phrase if you’re feeling Cara Delevingne-inspired) can be a happy touch. Beanies keep the hair out of your face when walking to class on windy days, although I do recommend taking them off inside so people don’t refer to you as the “Girl With the Penguin Hat”.
Shameless plug time: to see an additional outfit featuring combat boots paired with jeggings, check out my Study Abroad post!

Tell me what you think!

What did you think of these outfits? Do you own combat boots? What do yours look like? Do you fold them over? What are you most excited about for fall? For me, I prefer my combat boots unfolded and I’m most looking forward to eating pumpkin pancakes at my school’s dining hall!

Fashion Recap: 2013 Emmy Awards Red Carpet

Fashion Recap: 2013 Emmy Awards Red Carpet

Television’s best were honored last night at the 65th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and, as with other award shows, the hottest stars walked the red carpet beforehand. As such, we have a bunch of swoon-worthy fashion to discuss! Let’s get right to it: read on to check out our favorite (and least favorite) looks from last night.

Top 5 Best-Dressed

In no particular order, here are my picks for best-dressed at this year’s Emmys:

Michelle Dockery in Prada

If you read CF regularly, you’ll know I’m a sucker for a good color combination, so naturally I was drawn towards this gorgeous two-tone Prada gown worn by the equally gorgeous Michelle Dockery. The ruby-red and burgundy halter-neck dress had a distinctly ladylike vibe, which Michelle accessorized with a matching clutch and jeweled sandals. Fred Leighton jewels finished off this sophisticated color-blocked look.

Looks On Campus: Tori – Mount Mary University

Looks On Campus: Tori – Mount Mary University

It was in that post-lunch, sleepy walk to my first afternoon class when I when I spotted Tori. With her edgy haircut, stunning smile, and unique sandals, she was impossible to miss! I knew I would regret not stopping to talk to her about her style, and I just had to know where she got those shoes.
Tori nailed the perfect back-to-school look for those lingering hot summer days. Her outfit caught my eye because it was professional enough for class, cool enough for summer, and very trendy to boot.

Tori 101

School: Mount Mary University

Year: Sophomore

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? ”The weather plays a big part in determining what I’m going to wear each day. I like to be comfortable. I’m also not very girly when it comes to my style. I like things that are more edgy and that aren’t very matchy-matchy.”
Where do you like to shop? ”I really like H&M, Forever 21, and TJ Maxx.”
How would you describe your sense of style? ”I’d say my style is confident, edgy, and bold.”
What made you choose this outfit? ”The weather mostly. It is hot out so I want to wear something that I’m not going to be regretting all day.”
What fashion advice would you give fellow college students? “Own what you’re wearing. Even if you’re wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants, own it. If you wear something that you’re comfortable in, it’s going to boost your self-esteem.”
What are your favorite fashion trends right now? “I’m really into the dark fall colors. I’m excited for the deep reds. I also love a bright bold lip. Loafer flats are also one of my favorite shoe trends right now.”
Do you have a favorite designer, if so who? “Alexander McQueen! I love it because it’s wearable art. It’s not something that you’d wear every day, but it is beautiful. It’s just extravagant.”
What do you do for fun, do you have any hobbies? “I love art and drawing. I’m reading Les Misérables right now and I’m doing an internship with Discovery World working with kids.”
Where is your outfit from? “My shorts are from Banana Republic, my shirt is from Dry Goods, and my shoes are from Burlington Coat Factory.”
If you could raid any celebrity’s closest, who’s would it be? ”Lady Gaga! Her shoes are awesome and I’d love to try on some of her wigs! She’s just fabulous.”

Elements of Tori’s Outfit

1. Wooden Earrings

Tori told me that these earrings were a gift last year and let me just say, whoever gave these earrings to her has exceptionally good taste. They are quintessential bohemian-chic and complement her outfit perfectly. These earrings make a statement without going overboard.
2. Boho Sandals

These unique sandals add a funky flare to Tori’s overall look. Not only do they go well with the boho style of the earrings, but they also add an edgy vibe to her look.
3. Striped Blouse

Mixing prints and patterns is a very popular trend right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to mix your plaids, florals and stripes together. This asymmetrical patterned blouse from Dry Goods is a perfect way to ease into the trend. Plus, the deep red hue is on trend for fall.

What Do You Think?

What do you think of Tori’s look? What do you wear to be professional at school, yet cool in the hot days of summer? Are you inspired by boho looks and mixed patterns? Let us know by leaving a comment below!

Looks from Books: Fashion Inspired by Brooklyn Girls

Looks from Books: Fashion Inspired by Brooklyn Girls

Welcome to the latest edition of Looks from Books, which aims to prove that you can look smart, while still being book-smart, too. Fashion inspiration can be found between the pages of your favorite stories, on well-designed book covers, and in your favorite characters… if you read closely enough.
This week, we’re taking a look at one of the hottest new titles in New Adult Contemporary Fiction, that balances snarky humor and sexy city life with all-too-real lessons about growing older and being a dependable adult. Here comes Gemma Burgess’ Brooklyn Girls!

 Inside Cover

Brooklyn Girls follows the escapades of Pia, a recent college graduate and burgeoning career-girl-about-town, and her friends Julia, Maddy, Angie, and Coco, as they live and learn together in a townhouse they share in Brooklyn. The first novel in the hilarious, sexy, and outrageous new series from veteran chick-lit writer Gemma Burgess, this book is equal parts laughter-inducing and lesson-imparting, in a way that’s relatable for the New Adult crowd.
Published this past July, Brooklyn Girls has been singled out for its uproariously funny tone, snarky lead characters, and dramatic narrative, as well as called out for its fluffy, feel-good message, which some critics found as unsuitable for its Brooklynite characters and distinctly urban setting. Regardless, the novel did well enough to warrant the continuation of the series, with the next novel in the series, Love and Chaos, set to publish in February of next year.

A Fashionable Literacy

Brooklyn Girls is hardly the first story told about a group of friends living in the Big Apple, and definitely not the first to tackle tough subjects like drinking, drugs, partying, pregnancies, and essentially struggling to grow up. We have trailblazers like these iconic television shows to thank for that:

Looks on Campus: Laura – Tufts University

Looks on Campus: Laura – Tufts University

I’m so glad I asked Laura about her outfit, because beyond her thoughtfully-pieced-together ensemble, I discovered a playful story behind each component. Laura’s outfit is just a small window into her adventurous spirit – a spirit that can inspire us all to keep exploring the nooks and crannies of life.

Laura 101

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Tapestries inspire me. I like timeless prints, and – not surprisingly – I love vintage thrift shops.”
Where do you like to shop? “Street markets, Goodwill in Davis Square, Zara, Mango, and Gap.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “I love floral, lace, and interesting patterns. I’m not a big follower of the bright colors trend and I don’t own many plain t-shirts. I tend to buy pieces that catch my eye, which results in having either nothing to wear it with, or not having an occasion to wear it to. I wait for the prefect moment, which comes soon enough. That’s my style.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “Well, my necklace and my bag are staples – I wear them all the time. These shoes from Debenhams are outrageous, and I chose them for their bright colors. I picked this skirt (also from Debenhams) for its shape, and I picked this Free People top to keep my outfit simple and understated to complement the shoes.”
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Wear things that are comfortable, but every once in a while, pick something outside of your comfort-zone and just own it.”

3 Kate Middleton-Inspired Fall Outfits

3 Kate Middleton-Inspired Fall Outfits

The Duchess of Cambridge is a fashion icon thanks to her timeless style and her ability to look professional without losing any femininity. She dresses youthfully without sacrificing modesty (except for that one incident with the see-through dress), which makes her style the perfect inspiration for a wide variety of occasions.
Kate Middleton may have an enviable wardrobe, but unfortunately its contents are just a tad bit too expensive for the average college girl (or sold out everywhere). But, never fear! Whether your budget is equivalent to a pauper’s or a princess’s, I’m going to show you three outfits that incorporate items you likely already own to add a touch of Kate Middleton to your outfits.

1. Riding Lace

One of Kate’s easy go-to looks consists of dark skinny jeans, riding boots, a tucked-in shirt, a belt, and a fitted jacket. I combined this with one of her favorite elements: lace. If you haven’t read of any of my articles before, be warned: thou shalt wear lace.
I adore creamy oatmeal shades all year around, but I find they work especially well for fall as an alternative to white. There’s also some bogus rule about not wearing white after Labor Day, but here at College Fashion we like to be rebels. (The fashionable kind).

2. Belted Lace

If there was a show called “Keeping Up With Kate,” I’m quite positive we’d see Kate rocking her belts every day of the week. She wears belts over her dresses, over her jackets, over her coats… you name it.
Since my personal motto is you can never have too much lace, I’m even sporting it on my black pumps. For jewelry, I went with the most majestic bracelet I own, brought back to life from ye olde prom days. Trench coats are timeless (which is why they’re often seen on the Doctor in Doctor Who).

3. Hunter’s Green

If, for some reason, you can’t stomach the lace, I suggest keeping the other themes — tucking in your shirt, wearing dark skinny jeans, riding boots, belts — and going for a classic top: the button-down. To make this outfit fall-appropriate, stick to warmer, richer colors. Think aubergine, oxblood, and hunter green. If you’re a pattern person, Kate tends to enjoy plaid and minimal polka dots.

Your thoughts?

Which of these looks is your favorite? Will you be recreating any of them? Please leave me a comment telling me what you love about Kate Middleton, and what you’re looking forward to wearing most this fall!  If you do, I promise to lay off the lace for a while.

The Interview:

College Fashion: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Carrie Harwood: I grew up in Somerset, where I started my blog over 5 years ago, and have since moved to London, got my degree, and started a job at the brill ASOS.com! It’s all a bit hectic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
CFHow would you define your style?
CH: My style is pretty eclectic. I like quirky pieces, and try to steer towards towards young, independent designers—but also can’t resist the odd high street purchase! I love feminine looks and pastels, but perhaps more increasingly I’m opting for classic pieces and lots of black…perhaps I’m just growing up a little, style-wise.

Looks on Campus: Emily – Vanderbilt University

Looks on Campus: Emily – Vanderbilt University

A close friend suggested that in order to hunt down the most fashionable Vanderbilt students, the Commons was the place to go. It is the residential area for all first-years and is chock-full of trendy students. (Sidenote: Have you ever noticed freshmen tend to be more well-dressed than the rest?) I decided to head over to the Commons hoping for an intriguing conversation with another girl who loves fashion as much as I do.
I first spotted Emily’s lovely mint bubble necklace. After running around the campus in the direct sunlight at noon, I appreciated her color palette even more. I also have to send my special thanks to Emily’s beautiful friend Grace who helped with this fun little interview. Thanks Emily and Grace for sharing your style secrets with us!

Emily 101

Name: Emily
Major: Communications
School: Vanderbilt University
Year: Junior
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I worked at a PR firm in West Hollywood this summer. The styles of my co-workers were all very inspiring. If I have to use a few words to describe their styles, it would be West Coast California surfers meet preppy office-wear. Also, Lauren Conrad is my all-time style inspiration. I’ve loved her since Laguna Beach and I follow her blog and Pinterest religiously now. I think she is so classy and California-cute, which is totally what I aspire to dress like.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “These days it’s pretty preppy. The way I dress at home is more laid-back, just more California! I wear a lot of tank tops and denim cutoffs when I’m there. Vanderbilt has pushed me towards the preppy and more dressed-up side in the past two years.”
Where is your outfit from? “My watch is Michael Kors. I got this necklace from a local boutique back home called Nectar. My jeans are from Nordstrom and my shoes are by Jack Rogers.”
If you could share one style secret with our fellow college girls, what would it be? “Comfy shoes are so important! No doubt about that. We walk a lot every day around campus, so comfortable shoes with a minimum heel are my must-have.” – Grace, Emily’s friend
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Dress more professionally. I work on campus part-time, so it requires me to look presentable at all times. But you never know who you might run into! You don’t want your future boss’s first impression of you to be in a tank top and Daisy Dukes.”
What are you favorite trends right now? ”Pastels! Colors like mint, coral, and lavender are my current favorites.”
Where do you like to shop?J. Crew is my number one destination to shop for school-appropriate outfits. I also love Express for more professional looks and American Eagle for my laid back days.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I love Rachel Bilson’s style. She’s also from Los Angeles. All of her pieces are very versatile and that’s what I envision my own perfect closet to be like.”
What is the one piece in your wardrobe that you think is important to invest in? ”Definitely a little black dress. My biggest shopping weakness is that I have way too many LBDs! But I do have a favorite one from a boutique in LA called Jaloux. It’s fit and flare with ruffle detail in a chiffon material.”

Elements of Emily’s Outfit:

1. Mint Statement Necklace
Emily wasn’t lying about LOVING pastels! The mint color fits the 80-degree Nashville weather perfectly, while the bubbles on the necklace add a lovely bit of movement when she walks around campus. It took her mere seconds to put this necklace on in the morning and it really elevated her style to the next level.

Fashion Inspiration: Ariana Grande’s “The Way”

Fashion Inspiration: Ariana Grande’s “The Way”

You might recognize this redhead from Nickelodeon, but 20-year-old Ariana Grande isn’t just another children’s TV show actress. She’s also a singer, and a very talented one at that! While her new album is set to be release today, her hit “The Way” has been blowing up the radio all summer long.
She’s got adorable style, right? If you’re loving her look as much as we are, you too can channel her uber feminine style with a few key pieces. I’ve put together two different looks inspired by Ariana’s style in “The Way” music video. Scroll down to see them both!

Would You Wear… D’Orsay Flats?

Would You Wear… D’Orsay Flats?

Ever since Jenni Kayne launched a line of d’orsay flats a few seasons back, we have been obsessed with the look. The trend immediately flourished and other designers, like 3.1 Phillip Lim, jumped on board. This fall is the first season that we’ve seen budget-friendly styles, which makes us cash-strapped college girls very happy.
The d’orsay flat style features a covered toe and heel with no sides. These flats are more casual than a traditional loafer, but more intriguing than a typical ballet flat. D’Orsay flats are quite versatile, which makes them a stylish yet comfy footwear choice that can work with a variety of different outfits. Try pairing them with boyfriend jeans, a pencil skirt, or denim shorts for early fall.

Stuck on styling ideas? We would wear them like this…

Now we want to know your thoughts!

Are you a fan of the d’orsay flat? Would you wear them? If not, why not? If yes, how would you style them? Leave us a line below and let’s discuss this shoe trend!

Runway Looks for Less: Tracy Reese Fall 2013 RTW

Runway Looks for Less: Tracy Reese Fall 2013 RTW

From leopard and plaid to pairing sweaters and skirts, Tracy Reese’s Fall 2013 collection is filled with all the hottest trends of the season. However, the cost of snagging an on-trend designer look can be out of reach for a majority of college students, which is where CF comes in: we’re here to show you how to get a runway-worthy look on a budget!
Don’t believe us? Just scroll down to check out three lower-priced versions of looks from Tracy Reese Fall 2013:

1. Stripes & Solids

Lately, we’ve been loving the look of bold stripes and this multicolored midi skirt is no exception. A piece like this makes enough of a statement on its own, so pairing it with a solid-colored sweater is the perfect addition to this autumnal look.

TV Fashion Recap: VMAs and Teen Wolf

TV Fashion Recap: VMAs and Teen Wolf

TV Fashion Recap is a biweekly column featuring the best of TV fashion. Every other week, we recreate our favorite outfits from the most recent episodes of all of the hottest shows. Stay tuned; we may feature your favorite show next!
Every other week, I break down the best of TV fashion, featuring my favorite looks from the last two weeks. This week, I was inspired by the VMAs  and Teen Wolf. Read on to check out the outfits!

1. MTV’s Video Music Awards: Mary Lambert’s Sequins and Long Pendant

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards was, as always, incredible. There were some great performances by Katy Perry, Macklemore, and a ton of other hot artists. ‘NSYNC also briefly reunited, which made all of my childhood dreams come true. Were you guys as obsessed with them as I was when you were younger?
Everyone looked gorgeous and glamorous, but Mary Lambert stood out when she sang “Same Love” with Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Jennifer Hudson. She ended up with a Best Video with a Message award, which I would have given to her solely because of her dress.
Unfortunately, as college girls, we aren’t attending many events that require floor-length sparkly dresses. For a more campus-friendly outfit that you could wear at a party, slip on a gold sparkly top, ensuring that all eyes will be on you. An unbuttoned blazer adds structure to the outfit and keeps you from getting cold. Slip on some dark wash jeans and a pair of heels to add a slight pop of color.
This look focuses on the sparkly top, so keep the accessories simple like Mary did. Add a simple pendant necklace, and to complete the ensemble, curl your hair into tousled waves.

2. Teen Wolf (Season 3, Episode 12): Allison’s Neutral Cardigan and Bright Tank

MTV also scored another fashion hit with the latest Teen Wolf episode. I’ve covered the show before (see here and here for more looks), and have gushed repeatedly about the eye candy, great storyline, and suspense. It’s one of my favorites, and if you aren’t already addicted to it, I’d highly recommend watching it — even if it’s just for the fashion, which is always amazing.
Allison, Scott’s love interest and a fledgling werewolf hunter, always looks perfect. Her outfits are always cute, feminine, and comfortable, meaning they’re perfect for class, studying, and walking around campus.
To recreate Allison’s ensemble, start with a neutral-colored, oversized sweater. Layer it over a bright red tank for an unexpected pop of color, and slip on a pair of skinny jeans. Add a pair of distressed leather boots, which are one of Allison’s wardrobe staples.
Allison’s outfit works because it looks effortless and casual, so for the finishing touch, put on some delicate gold jewelry. To really tie the look together, curl your hair into loose waves or put it in a messy bun – definitely one of my favorite hairstyles while I’m studying!

Your thoughts?

Study Abroad in the UK: 3 Ways to Survive Your First Semester

If you’re studying abroad this year, chances are you’re feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves, which is totally normal. But don’t let your fears outweigh all the good things ahead – if you’re settling into your new UK dorm room and are feeling a little bit lost, CF is here to help!
As an American who has studied (and is now living) abroad, I’m going to share three of my best tips for surviving your first semester in the UK:

1. Make an Effort to Make Friends

You know what’s really cool about studying abroad? Aside from all the amazing things you’ll see in your new city, the travel opportunities, and the culture, it’s a great chance to make connections with people from all over the world. Don’t seclude yourself or miss opportunities to make friends – not only will your time be quite lonely, but you’ll miss out on awesome adventures and memories.

Game Day Fashion: 4 Cute Outfit Ideas for Football Season

To me, fall is one of the best times of the year. Classes start again, everything pumpkin-flavored is back on the shelves, and football season starts! I’m not the biggest sports fan, but there’s something about college football season that makes me really happy. If you’re lucky enough to go to a school that really appreciates game days, you know exactly what I’m talking about. There’s a certain excitement that arrives after the first game of the season, and it’s fun to be part of it.
The South is known for its tailgating traditions, but schools across the nation also have their own traditions. If you’re looking to show a little school spirit while staying chic, CF has you covered – no bookstore t-shirts required!

Plus Size Fashion: 3 Ways to Dress for Success

Plus Size Fashion: 3 Ways to Dress for Success

We’re nearing the end of August which means one of two things: that fall semester has already started for you, or it will be starting in the coming week or so.
With a new semester comes new courses, new professors, and new opportunities, which means that dressing for success is crucial. A cute outfit can change your entire outlook on the day ahead of you and in my experience, make your day great.
